CAMILLA WEXELS RISER work as a visual artist with painting, drawing, printing and sculptural constructions, land art and immersive site specific-installations. When working with installations or other large-scale art projects, often in collaboration with James Moore *(MOOWEX) and/or other artists representing different disciplines. Cwr also work as a scenographer and costume designer for dance and theatre, and as an exhibition designer and art mediator.
CAMILLA WEXELS RISER is currently working to bridge her work between scenography in performing theatre / contemporary dance and her freestanding artistic practice as a visual artist. She works comfortably with large scale immersive installation and concepts that involve found, collected and other harvested materials, often found second hand or in nature. She is currently working on making sculptures, objects and installations that can be both freestanding works of art and that can be facilitated by other artist in different artistic genres. She is successively collaborating with several different artist collectives to develop new strategies for making tactile and sensory work. This work is often presented in untraditional sites but also in more traditional exhibition venues. Wexels Riser sees herself as a harvester and collector. Finding the right material will provoke diverse and personal associations and therethrough pierce into the subconscious of the audience through tactility and sensory experience as she uses the symbolic meaning of the different chosen materials will enable us to get different perspectives and understanding of our experiences of art and off our self.
An important part of Wexels Risers practice is to work process-oriented, making the collaboration between not all participants but also the different material that include space and site, light, sound, actors and performers. Working with a flat structure to make a complete entirety. CWR is currently investigating and experimenting specifically with seaweed and bark for usage in production as a sustainable material for art production and is inspired by culture historical techniques of how to assemble this material togetherCAMILLA WEXELS RISER er en billed kunstner som arbeider med omfattende stedsspesifikke installasjoner, tegning og maleri. Som freelance scenograf arbeider hun med dans og teater. CWR arbeider prosessorientert og stedssensitivt innenfor både scenekunst og billedkunstfeltet og mitt fokus og utgangspunkt er alltid materialet. Materialene CWR benytter har avgjørende innvirkning og betydning for hvordan vi opplever verkene rent sensorisk. Det taktile, sanselige og den symbolske betydningen av materialet er utslagsgivende for alle valg hun tar, materialiteten former prosjektene på en slik måte at alle valg og ideer blir katalysatorer for prosjektet på en organisk måte. Bruk av materialitet fungerer dramaturgisk, det danner mening og tydeliggjør innhold.
Selve arbeidet med organiske materialer er interessant i et kulturhistorisk perspektiv og hun inspireres av gamle håndverkstradisjoner.
Wexels Riser´s malerier fokuserer ofte på figurative karakterer iscenesatt i ulike settinger som spesiellt viser utstøtte og disenfranchised . Verkene er oftest utarbeidet rent intuitivt, og starter opp med en tilstand. Gjennom improvisasjon med kull og maling oppstår former og figurasjoner som hun forfølger rent spontant. Maleriene viser drømme / marerittaktige scenarier hvor de skissepregede arbeidene åpner opp for tilskuerens egen tolkning. “ Det er noe forførende med absurde og tabubelagte temaer som vår virkelighet også innebærer, spesielt de som engasjerer vår underbevissthet.”
Hennes installasjoner er ofte del av omfattende prosjekter som enten er ren installasjon men kan også være del av en større teatral el musikals setting. Hennes arbeidsform er ofte preget av lange prosessorienterte arbeids perioder hvor mytologi, taktilitet og sanselige opplevelser er prominente.
CWR er medlem av Norske Billedkunstnere, Østfold Billedkunstnere og Norske Scenografer. Hun har en bachelor fra Norwegian Academy of Figure Theater (1994), samt post-graduate studie fra NAFT og DAMU i Prag, Tsjekkia (1996). Hun studerte også ved Oslo-Tegne og Male Skole i 1987-88.
Wexels Riser har motatt flere stipend fra Norsk Kulturråd og er innkjøpt av Fredrikstad Kommune.
